Local Volunteers Celebrate Earth Day by Volunteering at Nonprofit Urban Farm

This post expresses the views and opinions of the author(s) and not necessarily that of The Clifton Times management or staff.

Volunteers from across North Jersey joined City Green, a nonprofit urban farming and gardening organization, to kick off City Green’s volunteer season by lending a hand to support green spaces in their communities. The Volunteer kick-off coincided with Earth Week and provided local residents with the opportunity to celebrate Earth Week with an environmental organization.

City Green’s farming and gardening teams led volunteers at the Farm Eco-Center in planting native trees, refreshing perennial rain gardens, and preparing farm beds for the upcoming growing season.

“I love volunteering at City Green. Volunteering gives me the chance to get my hands dirty and learn about organic farming while helping to provide a service that gives back to the community,” long-time City Green volunteer Matthew Fellner shared. “I look forward to it every Wednesday!”

City Green’s Farm Eco-Center, formerly known as the Schultheis Farm, is a five-acre site located on Grove Street in Clifton, NJ. The Farm Eco-Center is a permanently preserved and accessible green open space that is home to 2.5 acres of sustainable vegetable production as well as a Learning Farm that provides local youth with access to hands-on, nature-based education. The Farm Eco-Center is open for members of the community to visit throughout the summer and hosts a variety of City Green’s events that include farmers’ markets, family and educational programs, and community festivals.

Individuals interested in volunteering can join City Green Wednesdays at the Farm Eco-Center from April through November for a morning volunteer session maintaining native pollinator gardens or for an afternoon session working in the sustainable farm fields. Volunteers of any skill level are welcome to attend the volunteer sessions and contribute to maintaining the Farm Eco-Center’s sustainable and accessible public green space. New volunteers can register for orientation on our website at citygreenonline.org/volunteer.

"The City Green Farm Eco-Center would not be what it is today without volunteer support!” Liz Kleisner, City Green’s Director of Community Horticulture shared. “ Not only do volunteers provide hard-working hands that keep our property beautiful and operating, but their enthusiasm and engagement help make City Green a community space where we come together and share admiration for nature. I have endless gratitude for volunteers and all they do."

City Green is a 501(c)3 urban farming and gardening organization, based in Clifton, New Jersey working to revitalize urban areas through agriculture and educational programming.
