NJ Secretary of Agriculture Visits Clifton Stop & Shop, Discusses Partnerships with NJ Farms

New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary, Douglas Fisher, visited the Clifton Stop & Shop at 160 Kingsland Road to discuss the importance of New Jersey farms to both the New Jersey economy and its consumers.

Stop & Shop’s support of New Jersey is sincerely appreciated,” NJDA Secretary Douglas Fisher said. “Local means Jersey Fresh and informs customers they are buying fruits and vegetables grown right here in the Garden State.”

“Stop & Shop customers turn to us for high-quality, local produce to feed their families, and we are proud to be able to partner with and support the farmers whose work is so vital to New Jersey’s economy and to each and every New Jersey family.”  said Stop & Shop Vice President of Fresh, Brian Fleming

  • The state's almost 9,900 farms generate cash receipts of more than $1.1 billion.
  • Food and agriculture are New Jersey's third largest industry, behind pharmaceuticals and tourism, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue to the state.
  • Productive farmland covers nearly 750,000 acres.
  • Farmers in the Garden State produce more than 100 different kinds of fruits and vegetables.
  • Nationally, New Jersey is one of the top 10 producers of blueberries, cranberries, peaches, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, sweet corn, spinach, squash, and asparagus.

“Our farm’s relationship with Stop & Shop has proved to be a very beneficial partnership for us,” said Abma Farms owner and operator Jimmy Abma. “Having this important avenue to distribute and sell our produce allows us to develop a better plan for the types and amounts of crops we need to grow each year.”

Stop & Shop currently sources and sells produce from eight New Jersey farms, offering farm-fresh favorites like zucchini, plum tomatoes, eggplant, cabbage, and corn at its NJ stores. Additionally, Stop & Shop runs a program each summer called Local Produce for Locals in Need, bringing the same local produce it sells in-store to residents who may not be able to access it.
