Rachel Zegler has been reportedly invited to present at the 2022 Academy awards, after she  shared on social media that he hadn’t yet received an invitation.

She will present during the upcoming Oscars ceremony broadcast from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, after a receiving an invitation from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Currently in London filming Disney’s remake of Snow White, Zegler said on Twitter over the weekend that she would “…root for West Side Story from my couch…and hope for some last-minute miracle to occur. I’m disappointed, but so proud of our movie.”  Many of her fans reacted with shock and upset.

There is speculation that the instant backlash Zegler’s post received may have caused the resulting invitation. Industry insiders and celebrities commented on social media about the unlikely scenario a lead role in a nominated film wouldn’t be invited.  So far, the Academy and film studio have not commented.

After her fans erupted in disbelief, Zegler posted on Twitter that everyone should “respect the process” for the behind-the-scenes work and time films and award shows take.   The ABC Oscars website has an ongoing list of presenter announcements, with the last update March 21st.

Zegler stars as the lead Maria in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. Although Zegler did not receive an Oscar nomination for her role, the movie is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose, among others.

Zegler won a Golden Globe for her performance as Maria, and best actress at the National Board of Review, making her the second Latina to win and the youngest winner at 20 years old.
