Lauren Murphy Scholarship Fund: Honoring A Life Well Lived

Lauren Murphy has always been about connections: making sure like-minded people could meet and network or socialize, putting people in touch with the right business, organization, school, or charity group to meet their needs, telling the people who could help others about needs in the community. She did all this in addition to her job running the Passaic County One Stop Career Center which provides a variety of career and education services for disadvantaged youth, veterans, older workers, and others.

She was a City Councilwoman for almost a decade and promoted many city events. She volunteered her time and money to a variety of causes such as St. Peter's Haven and Relay for Life and was known for her dedication to those in need. Murphy believed that everyone should be treated with dignity, listened to, and helped with the amenities we take for granted such as a hot meal, a shower, decent clothing, and most of all, compassion. The tributes pouring in on social media in the wake of her death all spoke of her kindness, generosity, and drive to help others.

When it became apparent that her grueling cancer treatment was not working, some of her friends started discussing how she should best be honored for her fierce commitment to Clifton and to helping others. It soon became clear that funding a scholarship in her name was the right choice. The non-partisan criteria were that it had to be a Clifton High School Senior who planned on majoring in social work, and it would require an application form and an essay about their career choice. The proposal was met with great enthusiasm and many offers to help with publicity and donations.

The first scholarship of $500 will be awarded in June of this year at the high school’s scholarship night. The City Council has pledged $200, the School District will have a “dress down day” as a fundraiser and other donations are starting to come in. The scholarship committee is hoping to raise enough to fully fund the award for this year and to get a head start on saving for 2025.

If you would like to donate in any amount, you can mail a check to: “Lauren Murphy Scholarship Fund, 57 Dalewood Avenue, Clifton, NJ 07013." Information on donating via Venmo will be posted shortly. The committee hopes that recipients of this scholarship will continue on Murphy’s path of making the world a little better, one person at a time.
