Update Sat. night:
———————————-
One thing we can all agree on is that the annual Halloween Parade and Costume Contest is a wonderful Clifton tradition enjoyed by people of all ages. It brings smiles and laughter to so many, who line Van Houten in eager anticipation. This Sunday will be no different, weather permitting.
As always, the Clifton Mustang Marching Band will lead the parade starting at 12:15 p.m. sharp. They step off near school 13 and march up Van Houten Avenue to the Municipal Complex at 900 Clifton Avenue. While there is no pre-registration for the costume contest, there will be on-site registration on the day of the event for participants.
Judging will be broken down by age; contestants must be at their appointed corner between 11:30 AM and noon as follows:
Ages 0-3: Corner of Sago St. & Van Houten Ave. - Total Garment Cleaners
Ages 4-5: Meet in the Edible Arrangements parking lot on Van Houten Ave.
Ages 6-8: Corner of Sebago St. & Van Houten Ave. - Van Houten Auto Repair
Ages 9-12: Corner of Penobscot St. & Van Houten Ave. - John D. Pogorelec Jr. Law Offices
Floats & Families: Corner of Orono & Van Houten Ave. – formally P&A Auto Parts
Pets: Corner of Monhegan St. near School 13.
Teens & Adults: Corner of Machias St. & Van Houten Ave. - School #13
Large groups can contact the Clifton Recreation Department online with questions. Please note that participants can only compete in one category, either as an individual or part of a group, but not both.
While the judging for the contests is taking place, everyone not involved with costumes can stroll the Municipal Complex grounds and enjoy the delicious food and drinks available for sale, browse various crafts and unique items, and catch up with friends and neighbors. Children can enjoy carnival-style rides, do a variety of crafts, and have fun celebrating the spirit of the season in a safe, wholesome environment. Games and rides cost a nominal amount and tokens for them can be purchased, cash only, ahead of time and on the day of the event. You may purchase $5.00 bags of game tokens or individual ride tokens for $1.00 each at the Recreation Department. Black tokens are for games and Green tokens are for rides. There are no refunds on tokens; however, unused tokens do not expire and can be used the following year. For every $5.00 bag of pre-purchased game tokens, you will receive one Free ride token.
Because what’s a weekend without a gloomy, rainy forecast…in the event of rain, the parade will be canceled and the costume contest will be moved to the Clifton High School gym at 333 Colfax Avenue. Onsite registration will go from 11:30 to noon, the band will perform, and then judging will take place. HarvestFest will have limited exhibitors. Please call the weather hotline at 973-470-5680 on Sunday to see where it will be held.
