In accordance with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) regulations for “Notification and Public Outreach,” Lubrizol Advanced Materials, Inc. (Lubrizol) is required to provide information relating to environmental conditions and remedial activities being conducted at the above-referenced site.
The site has been involved in the manufacture of chemicals for commercial use since the mid-1950s. Chemicals associated with site operations included but may not be limited to: 1,4-Dioxane, 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, 1,4-Dichlorobenzene, Chlorobenzene, Benzene, 2-Methylnaphthalene, and Naphthalene and were detected in the soil and/or groundwater in sampling activities conducted since 2000. Since this time, the person conducting the remediation has determined that the Chlorobenzene and Benzene contamination in the groundwater has potentially migrated off-site from the southeastern corner of the property. The extent of groundwater contamination has been determined as of December 2022. In addition, the presence of historic fill material has been identified on the property. Associated contaminants in the historic fill includes heavy metals in groundwater and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and p,p’-DDD in soil. The extent of the historic fill has been defined on the property.
Lubrizol is conducting remedial activities in accordance with the requirements of the NJDEP to address the chemical contaminants detected. Institutional/Engineering controls are being employed to prevent public exposure. Lubrizol has evaluated the environmental impacts from the site including the potential for the contamination from this site to affect drinking water wells and/or the quality of indoor air to ensure that any impacts from the contamination is promptly mitigated.
