The Theater League of Clifton will hold auditions for its production of the musical comedy The Prom on May 15 and 17, with call backs by invitation only on May 19. Auditions will be held 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. for all three dates at the Living Hope Presbyterian Church, 303 Maplewood Ave., Clifton (one block from Valley Road).

Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16-32 bars from either a song from the show or a song in the style of the show (contemporary Broadway). Please bring sheet music. Actors may also be asked to read a short scene upon request. The audition also will include dancing and stage movement.

Lisa Poggi, the drama teacher at Clifton High School, is the director of the production. The show will be staged at the Clifton High School auditorium on July 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23.

The main roles, depicting high school teenagers and adults, will be required to demonstrate strong, Broadway-style voices. The cast includes teenagers Alyssa and Emma as well as some featured roles and adults Dee Dee Allen, Barry Glickman, Trent Oliver, Angie, Sheldon, Mr. Hawkins, and Mrs. Greene. There are also numerous teen ensemble roles. The Prom encourages gender diverse and color-conscious casting. Performers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, gender identities, and abilities are encouraged to audition.

The production’s storyline involves four eccentric Broadway stars in desperate need of a new stage. When they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town high school prom (a female student wants to bring her girlfriend to the event), they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue and themselves.

The Prom opened at the Longacre Theater on Broadway in October 2018 and received the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Musical.” Netflix, in December 2020, released a film adaptation of the play.

Founded in 2005, the Theater League of Clifton is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the arts through theatrical performances, while providing quality entertainment for all ages. The Theater League of Clifton welcomes volunteers in all aspects of performance and production.
