When people ask our family where we are from, we all take a quick pause. While we have lived in Clifton since 2018, we spent 12 years living in Tanzania, East Africa- a place that feels as much to us like home as Clifton does now. I was first a math teacher in the Peace Corps, and then, together with my husband, ran a grassroots project dedicated to vulnerable children and their families in a rural area of the Southern Highlands in Tanzania for 10 years. Our four children grew up at a Children's Village speaking Swahili and Kihehe, the local tribal language, for the first years of their lives.

I first learned of Amref Health Africa (Amref) when I moved to Tanzania, and since then I have always thought it was the most amazing organization. Working at the grassroots level for such a long time and dealing with health crises and limited resources, I saw firsthand how critical Amref's work is and what a difference it can make for a community. I also witnessed the partnership approach that Amref takes in training local champions -it is not only a most admirable and ethical approach, but also the most effective! I was so grateful that when we moved here to Clifton, I was able to continue the work I felt so passionate about as Amref's Senior Manager of Development.

With headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, Amref is the largest Africa-based healthcare nonprofit, serving millions of people every year across 35 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. From strengthening health systems and training African health workers to respond to the continent’s most critical health challenges, their goal is to create lasting health change by transforming African healthcare from within.

Amref is hosting "Trivia For a Cause" at Montclair Brewery Sunday Jan 29th at 3pm (tickets available online or at the door, $20 per person) to raise money for Amref’s Maternal and Child Health programs. Come play and win prizes and awards!

Amref Trivia for a Cause - Campaign200,000 women in Africa die every year during pregnancy and childbirth from preventable causes.
